Summer Exams 2021 - Ofqual consultation

As previously communicated, the Department for Education (DfE) have indicated that it will not be possible for summer exams to take place as planned. Ofqual have now launched a consultation seeking views on how to award grades in a way that reflects students’ performance fairly and accurately, recognising the disruption they have faced this year.

Following publication on Friday 15th January, the consultation will be open for two weeks and end on Friday 29 January at 23:45.

We have already studied the consultation in detail and suitable responses will be given both to this consultation and other organisations who are garnering the views of schools. However, the following information is provided to ensure that all students and parents are fully aware of this process. Whatever system is decided upon will affect the summer results that our students receive and therefore we felt it was important to make sure you were fully informed of this consultation and indeed made aware of how all parents and students are able to respond if they so wish. The link to respond online is included on the full consultation pages on the links below.

GCSE, AS & A level Qualifications.

In summary, Ofqual and the Department for Education propose that:

  • Grades should be based on teacher assessment.
  • Grades awarded should reflect the standard at which pupils are performing.
  • Final teacher assessment will be made towards the end of the year, similar to when exams would have been sat.
  • A breadth of evidence should inform teacher’s judgements.
  • Exam boards should provide a set of assessment papers to support assessment.
  • Exam boards should support internal quality assurance that takes place within schools.
  • Boards will undertake checks to make sure schools’ approaches are appropriate.
  • Pupils should be able to appeal if they think their grade does not reflect the evidence of their performance. In the first instance this would be to the school.
  • Private candidates should be able to be issued with a grade.

Their proposed timeline is as follows:

  • Students would continue with their education during this academic year
  • Students would be assessed by their teachers in a period beginning in May into early June
  • Teachers would submit grades to the exam boards by mid-June
  • External quality assurance by the exam boards would be ongoing throughout June
  • Results would be issued to students once the QA process is complete, most likely in early July
  • Student appeals could be submitted immediately following the issue of results and would first be considered by schools and colleges

The full consultation document can be found on this link

We have also created a document which lists the 68 questions that are included within this consultation. This can be viewed here.

Vocational and Technical Qualifications

Similar alternative arrangements are proposed for students taking vocational and technical qualifications, such as BTECs and Cambridge Technicals, to ensure students are treated fairly and are equally able to progress.

In summary, Ofqual and the Department for Education proposals that:

Written exams for Vocational and Technical qualifications that are taken instead of, or alongside, GCSEs, AS and A levels should not take place. Alternative arrangements will be put in place to award these results.

Internal assessment should continue to go ahead remotely, where relevant, for all learners where possible.

All- Online Safety

Whilst we all spend more time using devices as part of our daily lives, it is important that we protect and support children with staying safe online. We actively encourage parents to check devices and monitor social media platforms. When used appropriately, social media provides a wealth of benefits, unfortunately when misused it can have significant impacts on our young people. This is why we are asking you to check what your child has access to and how they are using it.

Our Safeguarding page on our school website has a number of identfied support materials for parents and young people. Some are highlighted below:

Online Safety

NSPCC Online Safety Help

From setting up parental controls to getting advice, parents can call the helpline on 0808 800 5002.

Zipit

Helping Teenagers deal with sexting.

We also have an Online Safety Procedure, Safeguarding Policy and Safeguarding Addendum, all of which are available on the Policies and Procedures page on the school website. We actively encourage parents and families to ensure they are familiar with the links to additional support for both Safeguarding and Online Safety.

Y11 - Applications to JTHS Sixth Form

Due to moving to remote learning, we have been unable to meet with Year 11 students face to face this half term. Therefore, we will be sending an electronic form to all students to collate their Post 16 decisions and to identify students who require further guidance. This form will be sent to the students’ school e-mail account following Year 11 Parents' Evening on the 26th January.

Current John Taylor students do not need to complete an application form; however, they do need to consider the entry requirements for their chosen courses and students will need to select 3 or 4 subjects as a maximum. Therefore, please use the Prospectus, that was provided in October, alongside the resources on the Post 16 Open Evening website (click here) to view the Post 16 courses that we offer and compare the entry requirements with your son/daughter's latest report to help ensure suitable courses are selected.

Y12 - Work Experience Week: 5th-9th July

As a result of losing face-to-face teacher contact time due to the pandemic, we have made the decision to cancel Year 12 Work Experience week in July and support students in completing virtual work experience instead. Therefore, normal lessons will take place during the 5th-9th of July and all students will be expected to attend school.

Year 12 students will be starting their Post 18 applications soon, therefore all students will benefit from engaging in the many virtual experiences being offered. We also recognise that some students who are applying for a medical related course may still want to source a face-to-face experience where available and in line with any Government guidelines at the time of applying.

Year 12 Tutors will be supporting students to secure virtual work experience and all students have been provided with a list of opportunities that they can apply for now (Please see a copy of the resources and support Year 12 have received already below). The Sixth Form team would welcome your support in checking that your son/daughter has applied for virtual work experience and if they are finding this difficult, please contact their tutor.

Student Guidance: Year 12 Work Experience Opportunities

Use the following links to organise virtual work experience. It is essential that all Year 12 complete work experience before the end of this academic year. Your form tutor will be starting to draft your reference for future employment and university applications; therefore, we advise all Year 12 students to try and complete work experience during February half term. At the end of this document, you will find instructions of how to record details of your placement on Unifrog so that your form tutor knows about it and you can refer back to it when you start to complete any applications or interviews.
