Please could we remind all parents that any student attending school with broken bones, crutches, casts and slings etc. must report to Reception so that a member of First Aid can complete a Risk Assessment. Heads of Year must also be informed by parents.
Students that are sent home ill and signed out by Reception, or any student signed out by the Data Hub, who then return back into school the same day, must sign back in at the Data Hub with Mrs Keeling.
On the 2nd March 2020, our Year 10 and 12 students will take part in employability skills interviews as part of their Careers Programme at John Taylor High School. This is a vital step in our students journey towards employment and this for many, will be their first ever interview with a professional. The aim is for all students to gain an insight into how they should prepare for an interview as well as conduct themselves during the process.
With over 300 students to interview, we need lots of people to interview the students and for that reason we would like to invite parents and friends of the school to volunteer their services for the day.
The interviews will take place in the training centre from 9.30 am until 3.40 pm with a break for refreshments at 11.10 am and lunch at 1.10 pm. Tea, coffee, biscuits and a buffet lunch will of course be provided for all those who volunteer on the day.
We would be delighted if you could join us for the whole day however if you cannot attend for the whole day then we would be more than happy to welcome for either the morning or the afternoon if preferred.
Please contact me via my email [email protected] if you would like to volunteer.
Kind regards
Mr C. Knight
Safer Internet Day is on Tuesday 11th February. Students will be marking this in school with assemblies led by their Heads of Year. To support parents in ensuring internet safety resources are available using the following link.
https://www.saferinternetday.org/
We have also attached for you a range of posters to support parents with Social Media. These guides have been created by the Online Safety Alliance.
Hollie Guard App and Consent.
Please find attached information from Staffordshire Safeguarding Children’s Board in relation to Consent and an app which helps keep men, women, boys and girls safe.
We will be holding our second Harry Potter Book Night on Tuesday 4 February 2020 from 4 to 6 pm in the LRC. All students are welcome to join us for a few hours of all things Harry Potterish, including games, potion-tasting and a quiz finale. Any student wishing to dress up as a Harry Potter character is very welcome to do so. There will be a prize for the best costume on the night.
Places are limited to 30 students. If your child is interested in attending, they need to sign up in the LRC and collect a parental permission letter. As the event finishes at 6pm students will need to ensure they are able to be collected from school by a parent or guardian.
Plans are being made to celebrate World Book Day in school on 5 March 2020. Year 7s will be involved in a lunchtime session to celebrate all things bookish and will be allowed to dress up as their favourite book character on the day should they wish to do so. Staff have also been invited to dress up on World Book Day.
We've had some fantastic costumes from students and staff in past years and we hope that our Y7s, who have shown themselves to be extremely keen readers, will enjoy participating in this exciting celebration. There will of course be a prize for the best costume from students and staff.
Any students from Y8 and above who are keen to help with celebrations can apply to be World Book Day Ambassadors. Interested students need to collect an application form from the LRC staff and they will also be allowed to dress up to help us promote World Book Day around school.
As always there will be a form competition, plus individual competitions run in school throughout the week. These include Literacy Cluedo, Bake a "Book" Cake, a Short Story Writing Competition, Find Staff's Book Recommendations and the opportunity to exchange World Book Day tokens for one of the specially produced books. In addition, we will be holding a Scholastic Book Fair from 20 to 26 March in the LRC, where students can use their World Book Day tokens to get £1 off a book of their choice.
We hope our students enjoy celebrating this year's World Book Day.

Year 13 Parents Evening is scheduled for Wednesday 5th February 2020. Your child will be given a paper booking sheet by their form tutor which they will then use to book 5 minute appointment slots with each member of staff. Please make sure your child knows what times are convenient for you to attend. It is advisable to leave 5 minute gaps between each appointment to ensure you can move between different rooms.
Y12 - Please see the following information regarding the work experience programme at HSBC.
The Work Experience programme at HSBC UK offers a five-day shadowing experience to students in the later years of full-time secondary education, sixth form or college. The programme has been set up with the idea to help young people from different social-economic backgrounds gain an insight into a professional environment, as well as the banking industry.
We have over 300 Work Experience opportunities nationwide, all of which will be available through June, July and August 2020. Specific details regarding each opportunity and the option to submit an application can be found here https://hsbc.taleo.net/careersection/external/moresearch.ftl?lang=en_GB&location=5536170451648&keyword=”HSBCWE2020%22&Location=Europe
The application process will entail some online questions and, if successful, a telephone interview. To help prepare for this, we recommend checking out our Application Hints and Tips page here: http://www.hsbc.com/careers/application-hints-and-tips. A telephone interview will be arranged with the student during the office hours (Monday to Friday), HSBC UK would request the education providers/authorities to allow the student to attend this interview during school hours where possible.
Our placements will be spread out across the UK and students can list their location preferences when applying, but please note that only one application should be submitted and we cannot make any guarantees on placing a student in their preferred location as this is subject to availability.
The closing date for applications is the 16th February 2020, however we do offer these on a rolling basis and do reserve the right to close some adverts early if we fill all our spaces. Places are limited so we recommend students apply as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
We will be running a programme of Easter revision sessions for selected subjects. Those that choose not to do one will be completing sufficient amounts of exam preparation during their curriculum time. We will be publishing the timetable and more details for this after half term.
Please encourage your Year 11 children to use GCSEPod for revision this year. It is a great revision tool and has loads of resources. There are some great tips for parents too on how to support pupils through revision. Please see the attached instructions on how to use.
Post 16 Decisions
Following a series of assemblies, open evenings and taster lessons last term, all Year 11 students have discussed with their Tutors the pathway that they wish to choose for their Post 16 studies. This information is being collated and will be communicated at the start of next month. As part of this communication, parents will be offered three different methods to discuss these options e.g. face to face meeting, telephone call or a return slip to confirm that the options are correct. Please can I confirm that current students DO NOT need to complete an application form to join our Sixth Form.
