Ramadan 2025

Ramadan begins on 1st March 2025 and is an important month for many of our Muslim students. During Ramadan (the ninth month of the lunar calendar), Muslims fast from dawn until sunset as an act of spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and empathy for those in need. It is a time for increased worship, kindness, and community. The thirty days of Ramadan ends with Eid-ul-Fitr in which families come together to celebrate the end of fasting.

Pupils should continue to follow their normal timetables and routines during Ramadan. This includes bringing their full PE kit. If they feel unwell or unable to participate, they should inform their teacher.

Please feel free to reach out to us if there are any specific needs or accommodations that can help support you during this period. Our school is here to ensure an inclusive and understanding environment for everyone.

Wishing our Muslim families a peaceful Ramadan.

Please also be reminded that our 'One Community Reflection Room' is open every lunchtime for all students between 1.25pm-1.45pm in E4. This will be a safe, warm and staffed space for our students who wish to spend some of their lunch break praying, meditating and/or reflecting.

Details below.

JTMAT Exceptional Achievement Award

Dear Parents/Carers and Teachers,

img_2128.jpgIt is with great pleasure to announce that the nominations for the prestigious JTMAT Exceptional Achievement Award is now open. This award gives all John Taylor Multi Academy Trust (JT MAT) pupils the chance to be recognised for their extraordinary achievements both inside and outside of school. We are extremely proud of our students at John Taylor High School and hope that parents and teachers will nominate a pupil should they meet the criteria.

If the nomination is successful, winners will receive a special gold pin badge presented by Mr Donoghue OBE, CEO JTMAT via an online celebration. This is a wonderful way for students to share their achievements with the school community and gain recognition for their dedication and success.

The deadline to nominate a pupil is at 4pm on Friday 13th June 2025 and the online celebration will take place on Friday 11th July 2025 in Mr Blanchenot’s office.

We look forward to receiving the nominations and celebrating those pupils who strive for personal excellence!

Employability Skills Focus – Self-Awareness

This half-term, our Employability Skills focus is Self-Awareness – a key skill that helps students understand their strengths, areas for development, and how they can apply this knowledge to their future goals.
  • KS3: Exploring ‘What is Self-Awareness?’ – helping students reflect on their skills, emotions, and actions to better understand themselves.
  • KS4: Aligning strengths with future goals – encouraging students to consider how their skills and interests can shape their future careers and aspirations.
Self_Awareness.PNGTo support this learning at home, here are some discussion ideas to help improve oracy and self-reflection:
  1. What makes you, YOU? – Ask your child what qualities, skills, or traits they think define them. Encourage them to think about what makes them unique and how this could help them in the future.
  2. Strengths & Growth Areas – Discuss what they feel they are good at and what they might want to improve. Share how self-awareness has helped you in your own life or career.
  3. Linking skills to the future – Talk about how strengths can align with different careers or life goals. Encourage them to think about jobs or opportunities that match their skills and interests.
Our students have been working hard to earn Employability Merits, with Year 8 and 8H leading the way – a huge well done to them! ?
Thank you for your support in helping students develop these essential skills. We look forward to seeing them grow in confidence and self-awareness throughout the term!
Here are the running totals for Merits.

World Book Day: An Origin Story

Our Librarian, Mr Weighall, visited Year 7 pupils in their assembly this week to tell them the origin story of the World Book Day celebrations. Its origin can be traced back as far back as the 4th century to the legend of St. George and the Spanish tradition of presenting a loved with a rose on St. George’s Day. Mr Weighall’s tale revealed how a pig famer of Valencia fell in love with the daughter of a bookseller during the 1920s, leading to the tradition being adapted to an exchange of roses and books between loved ones that spread throughout northern Spain.
IMG_2095.JPG
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) launched the official World Book Day in the mid-1990s, with the UK celebrating its first annual event in 1997. The date was moved from 23rd April to the first Thursday in March (to avoid conflicting with the Easter school holiday) and World Book Day UK has grown in popularity ever since. It is a day for people to come together and champion reading and literature, share stories, and even dress up as a character from their favourite book. The WBD UK charity provides schools with a £1 book token for every child, which can be exchanged in book shops and popular supermarkets for a limited-edition book during the month of March.

Year 7 pupil wins gymnastics competition

Whilst many of us were relaxing over half-term, Amelia in Year 7 dedicated her time to training and competing, ultimately winning the West Midlands Gymnastics competition. Her hard work and perseverance paid off as she achieved first place in her category, showcasing her impressive skills. Amelia's standout performance on the vault also earned her a gold medal!

Mr Markwell, Head of Year 7, was thrilled to meet with Amelia this week to find out more about her achievement. He said 'Amelia spoke proudly and passionately about gymnastics, it was clear to see to see she has a natural talent in her sport. Well done Amelia, we are really proud to have you in our Year 7 cohort!'

Primary School Athletics Festival

The Sports Hall was filled with fun and fitness on Thursday evening as the JTHS Sports Leaders & Sporting Young Ambassadors welcomed Year 3 & 4 pupils to the Primary School Athletics Festival.

The session began with a warm-up which Olivia in Year 12 led, along with the other Sports Leaders. The role of the leaders also included setting up the activities, welcoming the groups, refereeing races and being a friendly face for the primary school pupils.

It was brilliant to see the JTHS pupils taking on this leadership role and fully engaging the younger pupils in the activity. Throughout the session they led with integrity, perseverance, kindness and respect.

As the primary pupils took on the relay races and various sporting activities it was apparent there was a high-level of friendly competition between the groups as they supported each-other showing great communication and teamwork skills.

Mrs Berry, the SSCO, expressed her admiration for the enthusiasm shown by primary school pupils and the impressive leadership displayed by the JTHS Sports Leaders. She emphasised that these events provide a wonderful opportunity for students to engage with the local community. Mrs Berry congratulated everyone involved for their efforts in making the event successful.

Mexican Feast Success

Thank you to our talented canteen team for treating pupils to a delicious Mexican feast on Wednesday! There were many empty plates and the nachos and enchiladas were a real hit. The staff brought an extra touch of fun by wearing sombreros and decorating the canteen to showcase different cultures through food. We look forward to the next themed day!
