Catch-up with our Year 7s!

Thank you to everyone who attended the 'Welcome to Lower School' event this week - every child has the best opportunity to be happy, healthy and successful when family and school work closely together. Mr Markwell, Head of Year 7, has also been out and about speaking with some of our new Year 7 students to see how they have settled in!

Here's what Mr Markwell had to say.

new_pic.jpg
''It has been fantastic to see the amazing start that Year 7 have made to their time at JTHS - as a year group they have really demonstrated the JTHS values in the way that they have persevered in finding their way around, adapting to their new classes and showing kindess in the way they have treated each other. As Head of Year 7 I am really proud of what they have achieved, with at time of writing, well over 1000 merits and no negative behaviour points. We have already handed out lots of certificates to those students who got into the Year 7 'team of the week' in the first week and I was delighted to present Miss Storer's form, 7T, with the merit trophy in assembly for gaining 147 merits since the start of term. Congratulations to 7T, but also 7Y, Miss Sawojka's and Mrs Findon's form, who came a close second with 143 merits.
It was great to catch up with some students from 7C1 through the week to hear how their first week had gone. Dexter, Nell, Inaya and Jamie told me about how they had found their first week. Dexter said that he has enjoyed the range of subjects and he was looking forward to experiencing them on a regular basis. He could already see how having so many lessons would help him to be more organised. Nell added that is was good having different teachers for each lesson, as they knew more about their individual subject. Inaya talked about how her teachers we so kind and caring compared to some in the past, and how she felt supported and happy to ask questions if she had any.
Jamie was surprised that he had not got lost on more occasions, he said that his new friends had really helped him find his way. Infact Jamie said that making new friends was the part that he had really enjoyed about starting at JTHS. "There are so many people, a great chance to add to the friends that I already have".
Jamie had enjoyed the practical experiments in Science, especially using the bunsen burners, with Jamie enjoying the opportunity to use his imagination in English when he developed his creative writing skills. Nell said that she was most looking forward to Bonding day, which is coming up in October, as it is an opportunity to have some fun and get to know even more people.
Jamie finished by saying that he was most proud of being at JTHS - as a school community we are really proud of all of our year 7's. Congratulations and keep up the good work!

Your Child's Personal Development Session

For KS3/KS4 Personal Development will now be taught on a 6-session rotation each Monday morning and by the following staff teams across the year:

  • Health and Wellbeing,
  • Careers; Your future
  • Relationships and Sex Education
  • Staying safe offline and online
  • Celebrating equality and diversity
  • Right, Responsibilities and British Values

This change is to ensure students are being taught in expert teams.

KS5 will continue to be taught by their form tutors who have a wealth of knowledge and experience teaching the KS5 PD Curriculum.

Here is an overview of what is being taught in PD for each year group for the first rotation, along with some signposting for further support and information for parents:

A Level Sociology: essential course materials.

Dear Parents/Carers, please check on ParentPay for the details of course books and revision guides available to purchase through the school.  If you do choose to source these items yourself, please check you are buying the latest version of the resource; some textbooks have been updated and the older versions do not have the most up to date information and do not match the resources used in lessons and for homework/independent study.

Community Bench project with Royal British Legion and Thomas Russell Junior School

  featured image
bench_2.jpeg
During last year a group of year 9 students worked alongside year 6 students at Thomas Russell Junior School (now year 7) to design and paint a bench that is now installed alongside the pond in Barton.
The bench and materials were kindly donated by the Royal British Legion. Students were invited by representatives from the Royal British Legion to create a design celebrating elements of remembrance. The students met in November to design the visuals for the bench and on a series of hot afternoons in July painted the artwork.
We hope you will agree what a fantastic job the students did. Congratulations at all who were involved, we are very proud to have your work in our community for all to enjoy.

Congratulations to former student Ellie Smith

We are extremely proud of student Ellie Smith who has been selected to start in tomorrows game for Leicester Tigers. After completing her A-levels a year ago at JTHS, her hard work has paid off and a year later she has achieved her dream with her first run out at Welford Road tomorrow.

Ellie_Smith.jpg

Ellie's family wanted to share the news with JTHS staff due all the support she recieved from our Sixth Form team and school community! Here's what Ellie said last year when she collected her A-level results.
