Hot Chocolate with the Head 07/06/24

  featured image

It’s been an exciting week back after half-term with lots of events taking place across the school and the continuation of exams. Our pupils are displaying a tremendous amount of personal excellence during this period and we are extremely proud. This week we’d like to give an extra-special well done to Hannah, Isaac, Will, Archie, Connor, Isabella, Rebekah, Fatimah, Arwen, Noah and Lacy for being nominated for Hot Chocolate with the Head.

First to share with the group was our Year 7 pupils who had been nominated for their outstanding literacy skills and have gained the ‘multi-millionaire’ status in the Accelerated Reader program. It was lovely to hear the group talk about their book recommendations, reviews, favourite authors and the storylines of films vs. books. Arwen shared with the group how she is currently reading the Twilight series which is about the seventh time she’d done so! It was a delight for Mrs Cochrane to hear how passionate our Year 7 readers are. Well done to Rebekah, Fatimah, Arwen and Noah.

Next to share their story with the group was Isaac and Archie, who had been nominated for giving up their own time to referee a football match between local primary schools, along with Hannah, Will, Connor & Isabella who were unfortunately unable to join this morning. Isaac and Archie both thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity and loved the fast-paced nature of the game which had lots of goals. It was apparent that they had extensive knowledge of the rules of football and was great to hear they would like to pursue refereeing in their spare time. Isaac also shared with the group that he has applied to become a Young Sporting Ambassador for the school, an initiative run by Mrs Berry. Good luck to you both!

The final student that had been nominated was Lacy in Year 12, who was unable to make the Hot Chocolate celebration today. However, Mrs Cochrane was delighted to hear how Lacy had shown integrity when faced with a difficult situation. It is wonderful to see our students displaying our core values in their school life. Well done Lacy!

Multi Skills Festival

This week our Year 12 BTEC Sports students and Sporting Young Ambassadors organised a successful Multi Skills Festival to over 165 local primary school pupils from The Mosely Academy, Shobnall Primary School and Thomas Russell Junior School.

The Multi Skills Festival is not only a great opportunity to build our relationship with local schools, but gives our Sports Students the experience of planning, organising and delivering a successful sporting event, which links to their course topics. Prior to the event there was an extensive amount of preparation for the students to ensure that the day ran smoothly. With the help of the Sporting Young Ambassadors, it was the Year 12 Sports Students responsibility to welcome the pupils, lead the warm-ups, set up & explain the different stations, time-keep and keep spirits high!

The activities they planned included relay races, football, bowling, javelin throwing, obstacle races and more! The Sports Students led with integrity, perseverance and showed kindness throughout the day. They showed true qualities of what great leadership takes and we hope they all benefited from the process. The interactions between the JTHS students & primary pupils were fantastic as they discussed tactics and supported each other with lots of cheering and high-fives! From start to finish there was a high-level of energy and enthusiasm and wonderful for the primary pupils to leave with their certificates which they were presented with. Well done to all those involved.

U13 Football County Champions

On Monday 3rd June, our U13 girls football team played in the county finals against Oldfields school. The girls were nervous but very excited to be representing JT in a final. The first half was extremely competitive, both teams had chances but Oldfields scored first. We scored soon after taking it to 1-1. Just before going in to half time, an own goal was scored so we were up 2-1. We came out stronger in the second half, scoring 4 more goals. The girls played so well, pressuring and closing down every time we were not in possession. Oldfields did score another goal just before full time. The final score at full time was 5-2 to JT. JT are county champions!  An amazing display of personal excellence and determination to succeed throughout the whole game.
A huge well done to the U13 county champions: Tallulah, Belle, Isla, Immy, Sophia, Hollie, Aurelie, Emilia, Lauren, Sara, Florence.

All students who took part thoroughly enjoyed playing their games & there was a lovely atmosphere. Huge well done to our sixth form leaders, they really demonstrated personal excellence throughout the whole event.

Careers - UCAT Exam Dates & Resources

When it comes to your students' medical application, navigating the UCAT exam efficiently can make all the difference. Scheduling UCAT tests strategically, along with targeted preparations for the exam, can significantly impact their success. As UCAT exam bookings open on 18th June, I recommend that they secure an end of August/early September test date. The test dates range from 8th July to 26th September, so selecting an end of August/early September date provides ample time for summer preparation and revision, without getting in the way of their studies in the new academic year.

To assist preparations for your students applying for the upcoming UCAT and UCAS medical application, we've developed a comprehensive Get Into Medicine E-learning course where we delve into the UCAT exam and the UCAS application process.

Yr 12/S5 and Yr 13/S6 reapplication students and parents can register for the Get Into Medicine E-Learning for FREE with code ‘getinto24’ here:
https://airtable.com/appgXnyzN5ZD9Iwk6/shrVqEUmlcJtucBEt

This FREE Get Into Medicine E-Learning provides a comprehensive overview of the application process, including the latest UCAT, Personal Statement and reapplication updates for the 2025 entry. Dr. Kennedy and I will delve into each step of the medical application journey, covering areas like:

- Entrance Exams: UCAT and UCATSEN
- Exam techniques and sample questions from each UCAT section
- UCAT shortcuts and timeline
- Best UCAT preparation techniques
- Tactically choosing universities
- Reapplications into Medical School
- Medical school interview skills
- Medical Leadership Programmes
- Medical Awards Programmes
- Extracurricular activities
- Work experience
- Building a medical CV
- Applying for scholarships to study medicine

Tailored for flexibility, this e-learning allows students to learn at their own convenience, fitting seamlessly into their busy schedules. It alleviates the stress of the medical application process, offering invaluable guidance for crafting an outstanding application to medical school.

While E-Learning offers flexibility to suit your students schedule, we understand they may still have questions or seek insights directly from a Chief Mentor. That's why we're excited to offer one-hour drop-in sessions with a Chief Mentor every Wednesday from 8-9pm. Simply check our events calendar for upcoming dates and access the link:
https://medicmentor.org/events/

The Get Into Medicine E-Learning is only available until the 30th June, so use the coupon code ‘getinto24’ and make sure to take advantage of this opportunity to get ahead of your medical school application journey!

Students in years 12/S5/NI13 or year 13/S6/NI14 re-application students can register for the FREE Get Into Medicine E-Learning with the coupon code ‘getinto24’ here:
https://airtable.com/appgXnyzN5ZD9Iwk6/shrVqEUmlcJtucBEt

We encourage parents to also watch the E-Learning so they are aware of the important aspects of the medical application process, but this is not a requirement.
