We appreciate your ongoing support in helping us to maintain high uniform standards. The first week following half term, the half termly uniform checks will begin during registration.
Can we please ask you support this by holding conversations with young people at home to ensure they understand the uniform expectations and that they have everything they need as the new half term commences.
You can access the Uniform Policy and Guidance for Year 7 - 11 and the Sixth Form Dresscode via the school website.
Thank you.
We have noticed an increasing amount of students wearing 'mini' shin pads during lessons and school sport. The nature of these shin pads mean that they provide very little coverage for impact to the lower leg. With student safety being paramount, we have taken the decision to prohibit the wearing of these for PE lessons and extracurricular activities at John Taylor High School. This is following us taking guidance from an advisor from the Association for Physical Education which is an organisation designed to advise schools on health and safety concerns with sport and PE.
We are therefore asking you to ensure that your son/daughter has shin pads which would give adequate protection to their lower leg. We have included some examples of what are considered mini shin pads and the level of coverage that is acceptable.
You will shortly be able to see Year 10 GCSE Target Grades in Go4Schools for your child. This will appear alongside a 'Current Grade' which is a combination of assessments completed so far and a 'Projected Grade' which is the grade that the class teacher believes the student could achieve at the end of the course. The 'Projected Grade' is based on their current 'live' grade as well as the progress they could make given their current work and attitude to learning.
Target Grades September 2023
The current Year 10 cohort do not have KS2 data because of the COVID Pandemic. There has been no additional information published to schools about accountability measures for 2024/2025. For this reason, we have decided to use the CAT scores, from testing completed at the start of your child’s education at JTHS. We will then use Fischer Family Trust (an external organisation) to create minimum expected grades for each student. FFT compare each student with all other students national who achieved the same CAT scores and the average GCSE grade they achieved for their subjects. We then cross-reference this with previous national results.
The 16–19 Discretinary Bursary Fund is a government-provided, means-tested fund available to support students who have difficulty in meeting costs relating to their studies. To qualify, you must be under 19 years of age on 31st August in the academic year in which you start your programme of study, and you will be expected to provide evidence of personal and/or financial hardship. Each case will be assessed individually, however, usually this would be based on a household income of £27,000 or less, plus any benefits you are in receipt of at this point in time.
For further information, please see the guidance and application form using the following link John Taylor High School (jths.co.uk).
If you have queries please do not hesitate to get in touch [email protected]
Thank you

For Parents - Protecting Children from Explicit Content
It is easy for any person, any age, to stumble across inappropriate and explicit content online and for parents this can be challenging. Internet Matters have a range of resources available to help parents including:
- Tips and tools for website/content filtering.
- What to do if your child sees explicit content.
- Resources for further help and support.
Additionally, with everything that is going on around the world at the moment it's important that parents know how to minimise the negative impact of what their children may be seeing. The Mental Health Foundation have put some advice together which i think would be very useful. You can find this HERE.
Health Education England has recently completed a discovery report on virtual work experience programmes, which have concluded that these programmes are a valuable adjunct to in-person work experience, especially by preparing students for in-person placements and where in-person experiences are extremely limited. The NHS Allied Healthcare Work Experience successfully invited 12,000 students to participate in the last academic year, making it the largest programme for students who are specifically interested in the following careers:
Nursing
Midwifery
Paramedicine
Physiotherapy
Occupational Therapy
Dietetics
Radiography
Prosthetics and Orthotics
Speech and language therapy
and Pharmacy!
Applications for this programme are now open, and they will be open throughout this academic year, with the next virtual work experience day taking place on the 5th November. Please forward these details to your interested students so they can participate in the monthly virtual work experience days. It is suitable for students in year groups 10-13.
During the work experience day, students will follow 2 patients from their initial presentation to recovery. Students will observe the healthcare professionals as they interact with the patients and each other. Students will have an opportunity to ask questions and gain knowledge through teaching.
This will help students to make an informed career decision as well as learn about how healthcare professionals work together as part of a multidisciplinary team. Each work experience day is completely different, and students will be able to build on their knowledge of NHS careers as they see different patient cases and healthcare professionals work in a variety of settings, such as hospital and community.
Students will also receive certificates as evidence of having participated in the work experience programme. Those that complete the entire 6-month programme will be awarded with Highly Commended References too. Students can register individually through the website link below. Places are £10 a day to cover administrative costs and run the tech on the day. Schools can also register groups online. We have also provided a poster attached to this email.
You can learn more and your students can register for the programme here: https://alliedhealthmentor.org/nhs-healthcare-careers-virtual-work-experience/.
