Year 10, 11, 12 & 13 - Getting into Medicine - Online Talk
As part of the celebrations for World Mental Health Day, JTHS hosted their first Tea and a Talk event. The event took place at lunchtime in the hall and gave pupils the chance to chat to other students and staff about the importance of mental health.
The event supported the #helloyellow event for the Young Minds charity.
Pupils had chance to buy tea and cake to raise money, as well as take part in some of the wellbeing activities on offer for them.
We raised just under £300 in total from the event. All pupils had the chance to wear a yellow ribbon or sticker in support of the event, as well as having an assembly in the morning delivered by Mr Markwell and yr 13 student, Alice letting pupils know about the importance of removing the stigma about mental health and making sure that they check in on their friend and ask them if they are ok.
The event wouldn't have been possible without the kindness and generosity of the staff and students at JTHS who donated, baked cakes and supported the event. So a big well done from Miss Senior and Mr Markwell.
We had lots of student volunteers who helped to make the event a success, they were an asset to the school and their enthusiasm was outstanding.
As well as the Tea and a Talk, staff were given the opportunity after work to have time away from school life by attending a staff yoga session hosted by Calm yoga studios. It was a fantastic experience and a much needed time to switch off in a busy half term.
Miss Senior and Mr Markwell
Monday 10th October the year 7 football team played Rawlett at home, after beating De Ferrers the week before. JT started strongly and went into a 3-0 lead. Rawlett fought back to put the pressure on to make the score 3-2. The strength and character of the team shone through, where they extended the lead to 4-2 to go through to the next round.
The U12's Girls football team soared to glory agains Landau Forte QEMS in the first round of the County Cup. They managed to win 11-0. All the girls were excellent and showed personal excellence in abundance during the match. Tallulah managed to score 5 goals and Florence got a hat-trick! Captain, Belle led the team with great integrity throughout. I am excited to see what the next round has in store for us.
A big well done to the team: Keira, Belle, Erin, Amillie, Tallulah, Lily, Florence, Isla and Sara.
Well done from Miss Senior
This week our Y8 girls attended the Burton and District Netball tournament. Numbers have been consistently high at training and so we were pleased to be able to enter 2 teams.
Our A team, captained by Connie, remained undefeated and in a series of 7 games only conceded 3 goals in the whole tournament! With a solid defensive set up, (Amelie, Connie, Kaitlin) we had countless turnovers, coming from nowhere to intercept the ball, forcing lots of errors from the opposition and winning almost every rebound!
The feeding and passage of play was so fluid from centre court (Beth, Jasmine, Martha) with immaculate feeds to our super shooters (Bea and Issy) who rarely missed a shot!
Special mentioned to Beth who got coach's players of the tournament - absolutely incredible play!
Our Y8 assistant coach Kellen (Y12) took the B team around the tournament who did so well in their first official set of fixtures, never before playing as this team of 7! Our B team made up of Ava, Issy (captain), Jess, Silver, Lexie, Sian and Esme, showed some real potential and determination. All of the girls took feedback really well and worked together as a team to play to the best of their ability.
Kellen would like to give a special shout out to the defenders of the team and especially Silver who she has selected as coach's player of the tournament for her wonderful interceptions and defending skills.
Well done Y8 - super proud of you! Mrs Williams and Kellen
On wednesday 12th November, the year 8 football team went away to Tamworth Enterprise in the county cup. This is the team's 3rd fixture of the year already picking up wins in both the district and county cup against Abbot Beyne and De Ferrers respectively. The team continued their good run with a comfortable 10-0 victory to take them into the next round.
On Wednesday 12th October, year 8 rugby hosted Rawlett, preparing for the county tournament the week after. On the back of a draw against De Ferrers in the previous week, John Taylor was looking for another performance to back this up. From kick off, JT were still asleep and Rawlett managed to claim the restart and run through to score the first try of the game. Tackles now started to fly in from Sam, Ollie and Archie and John Taylor put in a dominant defensive display before Rawlett managed to draw the JT forwards in and moved the ball out wide for their second try of the game. A response was needed, and with Oscar, Joe and Will making yards in attack it gave the opportunity for Charlie to perform a chip and chase to be rewarded with a JT try. In the second half JT had a lot of possession but struggled to make ground thanks to great defence from Rawlett, who ended up scoring another two unanswered tries to take the win.
The Year 9 netball team played against Thomas Alleynes on Tuesday 11th October. The girls struggled to find their flow in the first half and both teams made many unforced errors. The score at the end of the first quater was 2-2.
In the second and subsequent quarters, John Taylor upped their game, attacking with accuracy, finding each other in space and mixing up the feed to the circle, where our shooters were on form. Our team defence was brilliant too, with many players taking interceptions in their areas of the court. Thomas Alleynes did not score at all in this quarter and only scored twice more during the game. The final score was a fabulous 21-4. A huge well done!
On Monday 10th October, year 10 football played in the first round of the county cup in a JTMAT encounter against Kingsmead. The boys have played 2 and won 2 this year already. The team started well with Jake beating his man on a couple of occasions but lacking the final finish needed. JT took the opening chance of the game through Euan scoring his first of his hat trick. The lead didn't last long with a long free kick bouncing before the Kingsmead striker nipped in to finish low into the net. Pressure was mounting with both sides missing chances in the second half. John Taylor played well and created a key chance, before Euan was fouled and a penalty awarded. The resulting penalty was missed, and tackles continued to fly in from both sides. Penalties on the mind, John Taylor took their next chance and Euan finished low to the left to take the pressure off. A key save, 1-on-1 from Sam kept JT in the lead. The midfield 3 of Tom, Finn and Isaac continue to run the midfield extremely well, helping out Arthur and Joe at the back. In the last-minute JT sealed the win with a flick over the top from George, and a cool finish from 40 yards for Euan to complete his hat-trick.
Year 10 rugby played their second game of the year on Wednesday 12th October, against Rawlett. JT narrowly lost their first game by a score and were looking to bounce back with another strong performance. The squad consisted of 23 players, some playing their first game of rugby. Shout outs to Will, Sam and Rupert playing their first games with plenty of dominating tackles. John Taylor took the lead through a break form Joe, scoring to the left hand upright of the post. The conversion was successful from Johnny, taking the score to 7-0. Excellent tackle continued from Elliott, Cameron, Rupert and Joel to keep John Taylor in the lead. Cameron crashed himself over the line taking many Rawlett defenders with him to extend the lead to 12-0 with the conversion missed. The squad has gelled really well and will now prepare for a district tournament at Burton RFC next half term.
The follwoing students have been nominated for Hot Chocolate with Mrs Cochrane this week. Congratulations!

From Monday 31st October, we are pleased to inform you that there will be the opportunity for students to purchase breakfast from the ‘Grab and go’ door of the canteen for food to be eaten under the covered area.
The canteen will serve breakfast between 8:00am and 8:45am.
We have become aware of a dangerous Tik-Tok challenge that some students have attempted. It is called the Blackout Challenge and we believe it involves hyperventilating and pressing the chest to black out. People attempting this are at real risk of injury when they collapse. Please can you make your children aware of the dangers before they are hurt.
