Celebrating Outstanding A Level Results and Record Breaking Average Point Scores
Another outstanding year of A Level and BTEC results have been celebrated at John Taylor High School with over 56% of grades being achieved at A*, A or B. Early analysis has revealed that average point scores per student are the highest on record since the revised system.

7 students have successfully met the conditions of their offer from Oxford and Cambridge University. These include Imogen Clay (A*AA Philosophy), Hannah Jenkinson (A*A*A*A* Chemical Engineering); Kieran Mylrea (A*A*A*A* Natural Sciences); Emma Swift (A*A*A*A* Biomedical Sciences); Alexander Wakefield (A*A*AA Architecture); Daniel Wakefield (A*A*A*A* Architecture) and Amy Wilkinson (A*A*A*A* Natural Sciences).
A number of other students achieved exceptional results. They included John Crockett, Ryan Dingle, Bryony Hawkins and Roma Wylie (A*A*A*); Rebecca Kellaghan (A*A*A); James Kirke and William Gray (A*AAA); Holly Brandrick, Katie Burbridge and Francesca Cox (A*AA); Samuel Lippai (AAA) and at BTEC Level 3 Harvey Wedgbury (D*D*D*D); Charlotte Brookes, Charlotte Gillan, Caitlin Goodman, Anna Leason, Naomi Powell, Olivia Taylor, Megan Waddell, Cara Wilson, Toby Scarratt, Samuel Robinson and Alex Bradbury (D*D*D*); Kelsey Turner, James Bell and Hamzah Khalique (D*D*D); Thea Cummings (D*D*A); Tiana Roberts (D*DDD); William Smedley and Oliver Ford (D*DD) and Imaan Baig (DDD).
The intended destinations for these youngsters include Cambridge, Oxford, East Anglia, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Nottingham, Sheffield, York, Birmingham and Warwick, and their chosen subjects for study range from Veterinary Science, Medicine, Dentistry through Physics, Engineering and Sciences, to Law, International Relations, Philosophy and Languages.
In total, 18 ‘A’ Level students attained 3 A-grades or more, and 21 BTEC students achieved triple “Distinction*/Distinction” awards – an increase on the previous year.
Mrs Spencer, Director of Post 16 said “We are very proud of this level of outstanding performance and these results are testament to the hard work of our students and the staff that have supported them so diligently this year. Competitive universities and apprenticeship providers no longer base their judgements on academic performance alone. They want students to demonstrate a passion for their chosen subject. We encourage and equip our sixth formers to go well beyond an A level specification. This year’s students have been able to draw on their success in prestigious research placements, national competitions and on their extensive reading and independent research. We are also delighted with the achievement of individual students who have overcome personal difficulties or tragedies with the help of pastoral and support staff”.

Why are our numbers changing?
Staffordshire County Council (SCC) have decided to withdraw their telephony service to schools at the end of the current contract due to the diminishing role the Local Authority has within schools and academies. Unfortunately the school has never owned its own numbers and due to technical reasons SCC cannot transfer our existing numbers to the Trust’s chosen provider, Entrust Education.
All schools within who subscribe to the current SCC telephony service are in the same position as John Taylor high School.
When are our numbers changing?
Our numbers are due to change on the 4th August 2017 . The actual migration process will begin at 4:30pm on the previous day and will be completed before 9am on the 4th August 2017.
What are our new numbers?
We have decided to publish our two main numbers for parents. Please update our contact information as soon as possible on or after 4th August 2017:

What happens if I phone the old school numbers after we have migrated?
If you contact the old main school number (01283 239300) after we have migrated you will be prompted to redial our new number. We have taken the decision not to auto forward calls to our new number as this does not encourage parents, suppliers and other contacts to update their details.
If you contact any other number after the migration you will hear silence; no dial tone or no line busy tone.
Are there any cost savings associated with the new system?
Yes. Due to John Taylor’s unique position in the Trust (JTMAT) we have been able to secure discounts that will reduce our on-going telephony costs by approximately £2 per handset per month combined with a comprehensive call package.
The Summer Concert is now on Thursday 20th July, not 13th July as previously advertised on the school calendar. More details to follow shortly.
John Taylor MAT successful in free school bid

The Department for Education has announced this morning that John Taylor MAT has been successful in its application to run the new free school being constructed in Tatenhill. Opening in September 2018, the school will serve 11-18 year-olds in the locality, particularly the new housing developments in and around Branston Locks.
The £30 million construction, the first secondary school to be built in Staffordshire for almost twenty years, was one of 131 new free schools announced in this latest wave of applications. It is amongst one of the largest approved and, once at full capacity, will have approximately 1600 students on its roll.
CEO of the Trust, Mike Donoghue expressed his delight upon hearing the news: “It is both an amazing opportunity, and a deeply humbling honour to be given the privilege to lead the new school and help shape its community. As what will be the newest addition to our family of schools, we are committed to giving our all to make its children academically successful and personally well-rounded – young people that their parents, and we, can be proud of. The first steps on that journey started some time ago with our vision for the new school, and our pace will now quicken with this approval of our plans. Our application team have worked tirelessly towards today, and this is a much-deserved reward for their efforts. The group now becomes the delivery team, and I’m incredibly fortunate to be working alongside them. We have a busy time ahead!”

Year 11 pupils were today celebrating after receiving excellent results in their GCSE and BTEC courses. Over 78% of John Taylor pupils gained A* – C grades at GCSE in English and in GCSE Maths, with 71% of students achieving A*-C in both. This represents a continuation of the school’s high performance, with progress – an increasingly important measure of performance for all schools – remaining very strong, showing John Taylor adding significant value to students – boys and girls, and of differing abilities.
The average grade achieved by all students this year was B- and the initial Progress 8 measure is 0.41 (with 0 being the national average, and -0.5 being the ‘floor’ target) although this is subject to change as it relies on this year’s national figures.
Many pupils gained outstanding results. Particularly noteworthy in this context are Nathan De Giorgi, Calum Hutchison and Jessica Robb achieving 11 A*/A grades and Lucy Barlow, Jason Dierker, Caitlin Drew, Evie Gray, Rebecca Hand, Joshua Harper, Lauren Harrington, Ben Hodson-Walker, Alexandra Holmes, Ryan Knight, Peter Marples and Jack Simpson achieving 10 A*/A grades.
A further seven students gained 9 As and A*s, and fourteen more with 8 As and A*s. Students at the school achieved 655 A* or A grades. This means that 31% of GCSE grades were at A or A*.
English Baccalaureate results were strong once again with 44% of students achieving this measure.
At BTEC, there were similar successes, with 24% *Distinctions being achieved. Some 17% of the year group achieved 8As and A*s or equivalent. However, across all abilities, students performed extremely well, with four fifths of students achieving five of more GCSEs at grades A*-C.

This is based on the simple but effective formula of high quality courses, taught well by expert staff, to hard-working students supported effectively by their families and our community.
Everyone involved in their success deserves much credit, but the main plaudits must go to our fantastic young people, rightly referred to by Ofsted as “outstanding”. With impressive school results measured by EBacc and Progress 8, students continually demonstrate their ability to achieve high standards across the curriculum. They have also been a credit to themselves, their families, and the school for the contributions they have made to John Taylor outside the classroom, reinforcing our mission to educate the whole child.
This all bodes well for our young people as they move on to the next stages of their education. We will – as usual – be welcoming the majority of them back into our Sixth Form – which itself saw amazing results last week. But whether they remain with us or not, I have every confidence that they will continue to thrive both academically and personally. We wish each and every one of them further success.”
